personally
I am 35 years old and still can't decide if the World is a small place or an incredibly large one. My maternal grandmother is from Belfast, my mother from San Francisco, and I grew up in a small village of less than 200 inhabitants in the heart of the Swiss-Italian pre-Alps. My father was born and raised in my village, as were his father and grandfather. Before starting a family in Lodano, my paternal great-grandfather Silvio immigrated to California, where he worked for many years as a ranch hand. Two of his brothers remained in California, as did a sister of my paternal grandmother. I left Lodano when I was 18, convinced that there must be so many more exciting places in the world. I lived in Zurich, Dublin, and New York. And now I have returned to Lodano, married to an American from Pennsylvania, convinced that there is no more beautiful place in the world than Lodano.
professionally
I spend half of my time managing translation rights for a large international book publisher. I have a significant budget to meet; I go on business trips to London, Frankfurt, Milan, Paris, Moscow, and Kiev; I work with our US, UK, Canada, Singapore, and Australia offices, and I'm in daily contact with publishers all around the world; I pitch books for translation, negotiate contracts, and write market reports. I love it. I spend the other half of my time doing translations; revising, correcting, and reviewing other people's work; gardening, having coffee with my 94-year old grandmother, and working on the daunting project of renovating our 200-year old stone house. I love this too.
